The medicine pipe was a central element in the rituals of Indian Religion. The elaborately decorated pipe was protected in its own medicine bundle and was brought out on the most solemn of occasions. Care of the pipe was entrusted to a keeper on behalf of an individual warrior society or clan. The pipe holder was a man who was widely respected among the People and had proven himself worthy in war.
