The medicine man was a figure of exceptional power and prestige in the social order of all the Plains Indian tribes. He was both the healer and the high priest, ministering in a holistic manner to the bodies as well as the spirits of the People. He was also the ceremonial steward of tribal traditions, and served as confidant and counselor to the chiefs. The medicine man interpreted the sacred mysteries of creation for the People and was their liaison to the spirit world.
