The white men kept coming, and they were armed now with long rifles that echoed thunder and blood all summer long on the prairies. Mounting piles of buffalo bones bore silent witness to the end of an era. Starvation stalked the West as winter approached. The people were like haunted, hungry wolves scavenging for survival. They could not understand why their medicine had gong bad and the spirits had abandoned them.
