They pass like a pack of prowling wolves, silently, from shadow into sunlight for only a moment, then into shadow once more, ponies pausing to drink, then smoothly stepping on toward the creek bank beyond and fading fast into the darkness of trees, without a sound. They are warriors of the Crow People, stripped down in summertime and in search of their enemy's blood and his horses. They are at east in their element, ranging far and free from the Bighorns to the Beartooths and farther south still, living off the land and traveling where there are no trails, nothing at all to guide them but their instinct and the wisdom born of wild places.
