On a snow-covered hill, in a bitter cold wind, a Blackfeet warrior waves his buffalo robe as a signal to his companions. Such a robe or a blanket would be the largest item he would be likely to carry with him on the trail and therefore the most easily seen at a distance. His horse, protected by a heavy coast of winter hair, would not be likely to win a modern show, but he was wiry and tough and served the Plains Indian well in the days when the native American was still free to roam.
