It is a noun, not a verb. In other words, it is a state of being not an action. Actually it is a state that precedes Samadhi, or, enlightenment. It is also the root of the word in Japanese 'Zen' after travelling to China (and called Chan) and then on to Japan to form into 'Zen.'
