This proud prairie Madonna presents herself to the People in her best dress and with her baby in a cradle carried on her back. A Plains Indian infant would spend most of its first year in such a handcrafted contrivance made of a lattice work of wooden strips bound together with leather thongs and decorated with brass tacks. The cradle was a means of protection for the baby, and also a sleeping place and a method of transportation. The deerskin pouch attached to the frame was lined with soft fur or trade cloth and covered in a rawhide wrapper adorned with painted designs or beadwork.
